Note: I am certainly at the beginner level in both play, reading music, etc. Not a lot of time 10 - 30 mins just something everyday. I suspect I will be not tabbing by end of the year -but it seems to be a daily thing I need to do or my memory does not retain it. this is a D note ahhhh x string and y finger! I am doing this more and more. Given this I am beginning to look at muscic more and more and know hey. This might seem redundant but it has done a couple things for me: 1) I am learning the notes really well 2) how the note will lend itself to a finger and location on the finger board. Be it a basic simple melody (watered down) version and go to transposing from the notes to tab. I have been using this material /fingeringchart.htm and then I would pick a song (in music notation) I wanted to learn.
I would recommend a good violin teacher' one that you can feel comfortable with and get the basics will be a help in the long journey ahead.
Book 1 and 2 are easy and you'll learn at your own pace.all my beginning adult students use these and they are assigned a few pages as homework at each lesson and then we correct it as part of the lesson the following week. There are some great workbooks too that your teacher can help you with: Workbook for Strings, Violin. Learning tunes by ear is the oral tradition of how music was passed from father/grandfather/uncle to the youngsters in the family not that long ago.music on the front porch was a time-honored tradition and it is alive and well in certain parts of the South and other areas as well. Where it's true you don't have to read music to learn the fiddle, BUT.by starting now you'll have it mastered in a year or less to be able to read fairly just takes practice, practice and more practice. Jimmy.A good violin teacher will work with you on getting the basic of note reading down.once you have the nuts and bolts to it.it just takes alot of practice to get up to some reasonable speed and you can learn sight reading (notation) and fiddle tunes at the same time.if your young you have lots to gain by doing young I mean 30-40 years.
